Same year. Not the same story.
In 869 the Zanj rebellion began in the salt marshes of southern Iraq. In Japan the Jogan earthquake and tsunami struck the Sendai coast. They do not explain one another. They share a year.

Marsh and wave
Two well-documented events occupy 869 on opposite sides of Eurasia: a major revolt of enslaved East African and other laborers in Abbasid Iraq, and the Jogan tsunami recorded in Japanese sources.
Before
Abbasid plantation and canal labor in lower Iraq was already severe. Northeast Japan had a documentary court.
Why
The Zanj were forced into brutal drainage and salt work. The tsunami was a subduction earthquake, not a political event.

What
A revolt that would last years around Basra, and an earthquake-tsunami on 9 July 869 (Jogan 11).
How
Armed revolt in the marshes; seismic rupture along the Japan Trench, reconstructed by later geology and by the Nihon Sandai Jitsuroku.
The hinge
The honest hinge is coexistence on a calendar, not a hidden wire between marsh and wave.

What they knew
Each society knew its own catastrophe. Neither knew the other.
What they could not know
Modern geology would later use the Jogan deposit to understand tsunami risk at Fukushima. That reading is ours, not 869’s.

First record

After
The Zanj war lasted until 883. The Jogan sand sheet remained in the ground.
Later retelling
Do not braid them into one mystic disaster year. The method forbids a mechanism.
Limit
Two events in one year are not a pattern of 69.
What it does not prove
No relation between Iraq and Japan except the calendar.
Why it entered
Included to show that a year can be globally loud and still fail the later cluster.
