If this project only kept pretty years, 1369 would vanish. That would be a lie. In 1369 the Hundred Years’ War flared again. In China the Ming, proclaimed the year before, were still conquering. In Central Asia, Timur’s career was rising. The year was full. This aperture was quiet.

What would we hide if we only kept the years that shine?

West

In France the Hundred Years’ War, which had paused, opened again. Charles V pressed the English world of Edward III and the Black Prince. In Castile, Pedro was killed in 1369 and Henry of Trastámara held the crown. These are wars of succession and tax. They are not instruments, and they are not firsts of the kind this test keeps as anchors.

East

The Ming had been proclaimed in 1368. 1369 is a campaign year in that new dynasty’s first season, not the founding. The neighbor year holds the louder political fact. Keeping 1369 quiet is how the test stays honest about 68 | 69 | 70.

South and center

In Transoxiana Timur’s power was rising. Mamluk Egypt continued. Mali, after Mansa Musa’s earlier fourteenth-century peak, was still a world Mediterranean mapmakers could imagine in gold. None of this qualifies the aperture. It is why the year cannot be called empty.
