TWO SHORES

Landing and vizierate

Norman-Welsh and Flemish adventurers landed in Ireland at Diarmait’s invitation. In Cairo, Saladin, nephew of Shirkuh, became Fatimid vizier after his uncle’s death, while still in Nur al-Din’s orbit.

Before

Ireland had its own high-kingship contests. Egypt was a Fatimid state under Syrian military pressure.

Why

Diarmait wanted his kingdom back. Saladin’s house had just led Syrian troops in Egypt against Crusader and Fatimid complications.

Who

Irish kings; Cambro-Norman captains; Saladin and the Fatimid-Syrian armies.

Diarmait Mac Murchada · Robert FitzStephen · Richard de Clare (Strongbow, 1170) · Saladin · Nur al-Din

What

A military landing that began English royal involvement in Ireland, and a political appointment in Egypt.

How

Ships across the Irish Sea; court appointment after a general’s death.

The hinge

Keep 1169 as landing and vizierate. Do not import 1170 and 1187.

Where, and when

Bannow Bay and the Leinster coast; the Fatimid palace city of Cairo. 1169 for the first landings. Strongbow himself arrives in 1170. Henry II follows in 1171.

1169 · Leinster coast; Cairo

What they knew

Participants knew local stakes. They did not know later empires that would read these years as origins.

What they could not know

The later English lordship of Ireland, or Saladin’s recapture of Jerusalem in 1187.

Source object

Expugnatio Hibernica; Arabic biographies of Saladin

Gerald of Wales is partisan and later. Arabic sources are also interpretive.

The object survives.

First record

Near-contemporary Latin and Arabic narratives, each with a side.

After

Intervention deepened. Saladin later abolished the Fatimid caliphate (1171).

Later retelling

National stories make 1169 a destiny. It was an invitation, a landing, and an appointment.

Limit

Origins are easier to name than to date. 1169 is a beginning, not the whole.

What it does not prove

No 69-nature of conquest.

Why it entered

A diptych year: Ireland and Egypt share a calendar line, not a cause.

  1. 1. Gerald of Wales. Expugnatio Hibernica. Partisan Latin account of the Angevin intervention in Ireland.
  2. 2. Arabic biographies of Salah al-Din. Vizierate in Fatimid Egypt, 1169.
