Anchor year

542

A capital, and a disease already on the move.

Procopius describes plague in Constantinople in 542. Justinian himself fell ill and recovered. The outbreak is not a 542 invention: it is recorded in Egypt in 541. The aperture selected a year inside a pandemic, not a first day.

If the neighbor holds the origin, what does the selected year still hold?

Constantinople · 542

A city that could not bury its dead

Procopius writes from court. The infection is already in Egypt in 541. This plate is the capital year in the principal narrative, not a first day, and not a rhyme with any later plague.

CITY

Plague in the capital

The first pandemic of bubonic plague in the Mediterranean, later called the Plague of Justinian, is in Constantinople in 542. Procopius is the principal contemporary narrative. Death tolls in later retelling are inflated. The event is not.

Before

Justinian’s wars and building were already expensive. The plague did not begin them.

Why

Yersinia pestis, grain ships, crowding. Not a moral weather.

Who

The urban population of Constantinople; the imperial household; Procopius as witness-historian; the grain fleets that had already carried infection from Egypt.

Justinian I · Procopius of Caesarea · Theodora

What

An epidemic that stopped courts, burials, and food. Justinian sickened and survived.

How

Infection along supply. Mass graves. Breakdown of ordinary burial.

The hinge

The hinge is a city that cannot bury its dead, described by a man at court.

Where, and when

The city on the Bosporus, and the sea lanes that fed it. Spring and summer 542 in the capital. Origin in Pelusium, 541.

542 CE, after Pelusium and Egypt in 541 · Constantinople; the eastern Mediterranean already infected from Egypt

What they knew

Procopius knew he was watching a disaster. He did not have a bacillus.

What they could not know

Later waves, the Black Death, or that 542 would be picked by a terminal pair.

Source object

Procopius, History of the Wars, II.22–23

A contemporary narrative, rhetorical and specific. Not a parish register.

The object survives.

First record

Procopius; corroborating notices in other sixth-century writers.

After

Recurrences through the eighth century in some reconstructions. The empire continued.

Later retelling

Round numbers of daily dead. The rhetoric is part of the source problem.

Limit

541 is the documented Egyptian beginning. 542 is not the origin year.

What it does not prove

Does not make years ending in 42 a disease signature.

Why it entered

Included because a capital’s plague is independently major. Included with its neighbor.

Plague recorded at Pelusium in Egypt. The origin year in the same pandemic. Neighbor is not quieter.

Aperture

Independent medical and political history. 541, the arrival in Egypt, is a necessary neighbor. 542 is the capital year in the principal narrative.

The pandemic continues in the Mediterranean. Not empty.
