    Jung’s synchronicity as a 1969 event

    What caught our attention
    A collected-works date and a later paperback culture made 1969 look like the year of synchronicity.
    What we thought
    If 1969 already held Apollo, ARPANET, and a 42-hymn edition, perhaps Jung’s essay belonged in the same field.
    What we checked
    The German essay 'Synchronizität als ein Prinzip akausaler Zusammenhänge' appeared in 1952 with Pauli in Naturerklärung und Psyche. English: 1955, The Interpretation of Nature and the Psyche. Collected Works, volume 8, The Structure and Dynamics of the Psyche, first appeared in the Collected Works in 1960. Princeton’s revised cloth is dated January 1970 in the publisher catalogue; some lists print 1969 for volume 8. None of these is an origin in 1969.

    Routledge notes that volume 8 first appeared in the Collected Works in 1960. Princeton lists the revised volume as published 21 January 1970. The idea is mid-century, not 1969.
    Why it failed
    Publication date confused with original date, and even the 1969/1970 printing is a later state of a 1960 volume of a 1952 essay.

    Bibliographic states (essay, translation, collected volume, reprint) must not be collapsed into a single year to fatten a field.

    A dated letter on a pivoted needle is easy to promote into an invention myth.

    If the letter describes a dry pivoted compass, perhaps 1269 is the origin of the instrument.

    Magnetic direction-finding is earlier in China and already attested among European sailors before 1269. Peregrinus writes an experimental treatise and describes an improved instrument. He does not originate the compass.
    What the source actually said
    The letter itself assumes the lodestone and the needle as known. It teaches poles, tests, and a construction.

    Unsupported popular story, wrong attribution of origin.

    A first surviving Latin experimental text is not a first use.

    Patent year plus school-poster fame.

    A famous name and a famous year often collapse into an invention.
    What we checked
    Newcomen’s atmospheric engine was already pumping mines (1712). Watt’s 1765 insight and 1769 patent concern a separate condenser. Commercial Boulton & Watt engines are later.

    The patent title is a method of lessening consumption of steam and fuel in fire-engines already so called.

    Unsupported popular story.

    Patent years are legal events. They are not births of whole technologies.

    LO, then crash, then later the world.
    What we checked
    ARPANET’s first host-to-host message is 29 October 1969. TCP/IP, NSFNET, commercial ISPs, and the web are later. Four nodes by December 1969 is a research network.
    What the source actually said
    The surviving log records a test between UCLA and SRI, not a public internet.
    Why it failed
    Overclaim.
    What we learned
    First packets are not the later public network. Keep the incompleteness; it is the truth of the moment.

    Computing origin stories love a year.
    What we thought
    Thompson, PDP-7, 1969, therefore a birthday.
    What we checked
    1969 is the development year on a PDP-7 after the Multics withdrawal. The name Unix is 1970. The rewrite in C is later. Treating 1969 as a birth certificate over-sharpened a range.

    The authors’ own histories describe a stretch of years, not a press event.
    Why it failed
    Arbitrary rounding of a development range into a bang.
    What we learned
    A conventional year can still be tested if the range is shown. A bang cannot.

    The Hundred Years’ War resumed. Peter of Castile was killed. The Ming, founded in 1368, were campaigning. Timur’s rise belongs to these years.

    Political narrative sources for Europe, China, and Central Asia are not silent.
    Why it failed
    The year was full. The aperture was quiet. Collapsing those two is a method failure.
    What we learned
    Quiet field is a statement about a filter, not about the world.

    Mendeleev was writing a textbook, using cards, and working a classification problem already live in the 1860s. He missed the 6 March Julian meeting. A dream anecdote, even if later told, is not the first record.

    The first record is a paper and a table, presented by Menshutkin, printed in the society journal.

    Prefer the surviving paper to the later charm of a dream.

    Ferdinand and Isabella marry, therefore Spain.

    The crowns remained legally distinct. Isabella’s Castile and Ferdinand’s Aragon did not become one state at the altar. Granada fell in 1492. Even later Spain is not a simple object.

    The 1469 act is a marriage with capitulations, not a constitution.

    What caught our attention
    English schoolbooks and many encyclopedias print Isaac Newton’s birth as 25 December 1642. The digits match the aperture. The name was already meaningful in the wider archive.
    What we thought
    If Galileo dies in 1642 and Newton is born in 1642, perhaps the year is a physics hinge selected by 42.
    What we checked
    England still used the Julian calendar. 25 December 1642 Julian is 4 January 1643 in the Gregorian count already used in much of Catholic Europe. Galileo’s death on 8 January 1642 is Gregorian in Tuscany. The birth and the death do not share a reformed calendar year. Treating Newton as a 1642 object was a number-search on a beloved name.
    What the source actually said
    The Julian date is real in England. The Gregorian date is 1643. A 42 test does not get to keep the calendar that flatters it.
    Why it failed
    Wrong year under the calendar that makes the correspondence pretty. Already designed around 42 in affection. A miss.

    The more a number already means to us, the more carefully a date must be checked. Calendar conversion is not pedantry. It is the method.

    What caught our attention
    Douglas Adams’s 42 is the most famous 42 in late-twentieth-century culture. It is easy to smuggle into a historical sweep.
    What we thought
    If we are testing 42, surely the joke belongs somewhere in the field.
    What we checked
    The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is 1979. Adams was born in 1952. Neither date is a century year ending in 42 inside this corpus. 42 CE is a Claudian working year, not a punchline origin.
    What the source actually said
    The number in the novel is designed fiction. It is not a 1942 or 42 CE historical object.
    Why it failed
    Number designed. Wrong year. Wrong register.
    What we learned
    A designed number in a novel cannot be allowed to fatten a historical aperture, even when the number is the reason we care.

    Standard reference works mark the year as uncertain.

    Contested date, weak as a locked object, attractive because of the digits.
    What we learned
    If the year is the argument, and the year is not secure, the object does not enter.

    The printed books are 1543. The New Laws are 1542.

    Wrong year. Neighbor stolen to fatten 1542.

    If the neighbor is louder for science, the neighbor stays louder. The law still holds 1542.

    A quiet 1342 is tempting to fill with the most famous medieval pandemic.
    What we thought
    A plague would rhyme with 542 and give the aperture a disease signature.
    What we checked
    The Black Death reaches the Mediterranean in 1347 and much of Europe in 1348. 1342 is not that arrival. 542 already has a plague with a 541 neighbor. Rhyming them is a later composition, not a 1342 fact.

    The European catastrophe is 1347 to 48, not 1342.
    Why it failed
    Wrong year. Attractive rhyme.

    Do not invent a type (plague-years) after seeing 542.

    42 CE is a working year of Claudius. Britain is 43. Caligula’s death is 41. Adams is 1979. Treating 42 CE as a punchline would hide that both neighbors are louder.

    No ancient source knows a joke about the number 42 in this year.

    Sjöberg and Bergmann, The Collection of the Sumerian Temple Hymns, is 1969. The hymns are ancient. The edition is a 1969 object inside the 69 aperture. It is not a 1942 event.

    The dated modern book is 1969. 1942 has Wannsee and a pile. It does not have this edition.

    The x42 series is 42, 142, 242, 342, 442, 542, 642, 742, 842, 942, 1042, 1142, 1242, 1342, 1442, 1542, 1642, 1742, 1842, 1942. 420 does not end in 42. It contains 42. That is a different claim, already named in the taxonomy.
    What the source actually said
    A contained form is Near Field, if it enters at all. It does not change the denominator.
    Why it failed
    Wrong class of date. Mixing contained form with year-ending would inflate 42.

    Taxonomy is not ornament. 420 is not 442, and it is not 42 CE.

    The year is already famous; history can be fitted to the fame.
    What we checked
    The slang is twentieth-century North American date-culture around 20 April. Jerome, the Liu Song founding, and Yazdegerd I’s death are independently major without it. Bias control asked: would we still consider 420 CE interesting without the slang? Yes. Therefore the slang is not a warrant.
    What the source actually said
    No late antique source knows this joke. It is a different story, if it is ever told, on a different page.
    Why it failed
    Number designed in another century, then read backward.
    What we learned
    Cultural salience today is a bias to name, not a historical cause in 420.
