The denominator

Both corpora contain twenty century years. That does not make every difference meaningful. Coverage is similar and not identical. The 69 window runs to 1969. The 42 window runs to 1942. Modern documentation is denser in later centuries for both. Record survival, language, and research-time are confounds. A count is a description. It is not a verdict.

Neighbor loudness

69 is often matched or beaten by 68 or 70: 1368, 1568, 1570, 1868, 1968. 42 is often matched or beaten by 41 or 43: 41 and 43 around Claudius, 541 Pelusium, 641 Alexandria, 843 Verdun, 1241 Mohi and Legnica, 1543 Copernicus and Vesalius, 1941 and 1943 in the same war. Neither aperture is unique beside its neighbors. That is a result.

Same ontology. No special 42 categories. On a phone, read 42, then 69, then this comparison. The tables are claims about presence, not scores.

Before we searched

Every x42 candidate was asked: was this event important to the existing work before we searched the 42 years? Promoted stories that were already ours: 0. Promoted stories found through the sweep: 14. The correspondences we brought (Newton’s birth, Adams’s 42, Enheduanna as 1942) failed the year and live as misses. The history that entered was not previously ours.

Remove the number

A mixed group from both apertures. Dates off. Aperture off. Sit with the labels. Then restore year, aperture, source. This is not a quiz.

What 42 did not survive

• Uniqueness beside 68 and 70.

What changed when the aperture changed

69 gathered a late instrument cluster: magnet, map, light, sky, engine, table, moon, network. Early centuries were politically full and instrument-quiet. 42 gathered political and legal objects across a longer middle: plague, conquest, oath, ice, law, war, treaty, a protocol of crime, a pile. Science in 42 often sits next door (1543, 1643). Neither cluster was allowed to invent new categories. Quiet fields remain in both. Neighbors remain loud in both.

What the numbers revealed, and what we put there by looking, is not answered here.

Field 42 transfers

Candidates. Not a second visual identity. Not an automatic copy of every x42 event.

• Verified historical correspondence

  None of the promoted x42 events were already load-bearing in the existing work before this sweep. What entered, entered independently: Procopius’s capital year, Nahavand, the Strasbourg oaths, the New Laws, an English war, a coerced treaty, Wannsee, a pile under a football stand.

• Failed correspondence

  The beloved 42 objects failed the year test. Newton’s birth is 4 January 1643 Gregorian. Adams’s 42 is 1979 fiction. Charlemagne’s birth is contested. Copernicus is 1543. The Black Death is 1347. 42 CE is not a joke origin.

• Control result

  541, 641, 843, 1241, 1543, 1641, 1941, and 1943 are often as loud or louder than the selected year. 42 is not unique beside its neighbors.

• Source object

  Candidates, not copies: Nithard’s oaths; the Wannsee protocol; the Treaty of Nanking; the New Laws; the CP-1 log (the pile itself was dismantled).

• Question

  Does the aperture reveal the field, or does the aperture create the grouping? Keep it open. Do not answer it rhetorically.

• Method learning

  A number we already care about can be tested without being allowed to win. The correspondences we brought to the search failed. The history that entered was not previously ours.

• Date form

  420 CE is not an x42 year. It contains 42. 1690 contains 69. Contained forms live in Near Field. Mixing them with year-endings would invent a second dataset.

• Retrospective coordinate

  A correspondence can belong to the coordinate rather than to the historical actor. Late antique people were not necessarily living under the numeral 420.

• Translation

  Jerome in 420: a thought crossing Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. Candidate for language, not a duplicate of Enheduanna, and not a 42 of scripture.
